Kloof Street House

Situated a third of the way up Kloof Street, this classic yet trendy Victorian house gives off an inviting and slightly mysterious glow. You can’t help but want to wander into the little garden and up the front steps, just to see what it’s all about.

GPOK-22The grand, majestic entrance welcomes you and once inside the interior doesn’t disappoint. The high ceilings, wooden floors and warm, dark hues all contribute to the stately, colonial décor. Sophisticated yet comfortable furniture is arranged in a homely and hospitable way, transporting you back to a time long ago. In short, it boasts the elegance of colonialism without the stiff upper lip.

The romance of this setting is enhanced by the minimal lighting and candlelit tables. Varied seating options and separate rooms ensure that all needs are accommodated.  The bar and library room are available for those wanting just a drink and the main restaurant for those wanting to sit down for a meal.

The menu follows a similar decadent theme and portions are generous, ensuring that diners are treated to a lavish encounter and a wide range of eats to choose from. From delectable starters, snack platters and light salads to burgers, exquisite cuts of meat and fresh seafood; Kloof Street House caters for all palates.  Rare and rich ingredients are used, ensuring the treasures of the décor are reflected in the food and result in squeaky-clean plates returning to the kitchen. My husband and I both ordered the Fillet with Café de Paris butter followed by the exquisite Chocolate Fondant for pudding, both out of this world!  As a high-end restaurant the kitchen needs to be and is flexible with orders, allowing you to tailor your dish specifically to your liking and current meal plan!  Make sure you leave space for the mouth-watering desserts, which promise to provide the perfect sweet or savoury finale to your meal.  Main courses are priced at between R95 and R175.

In combination with the food there is a broad wine list incorporating affordable wines and the more top-end, special-treat ones. Be careful though, this is the type of restaurant that leaves you drinking much more than you originally intended!

The waiters and barmen are quirky, passionate and well-educated on the menu.  All-in-all they execute a polished performance, encouraging a pleasurable dining experience. Whether you want to simply pop in for a catch-up cocktail and bite with a friend or go the whole-nine-yards with a three course romantic meal, this is the just the spot.  Whatever you desire, a classy and opulent affair awaits
