Top places to grab a gourmet ice cream or milkshake in Green Point
Ladies wearing floral dresses and men striding around in board shorts is a sure sign summer is finally here! It also means locals and tourists alike will be flocking to the closest ice cream parlour or milkshake bar to cool down after a long day on the beach or gallivanting around town. Green Point has some of the top spots in Cape Town to grab a delicious gelato or gourmet milkshake:
Visit any review site or Cape Town blog, and you’ll quickly realise that Gelato Mania is one of the best places to grab an ice cream in Cape Town. Luckily for us it’s right on our door step. While driving on Main Road on a sweltering hot day you are guaranteed to be drawn in by this parlour, with its massive ice cream signboard that’s an attraction in itself. Stepping through the icy cool doors, customers become mesmerized by the interesting and delicious flavours on offer. For the chocolate lovers, there are flavours ranging from Bar-one and Choc Mint to Nutella; and for the fruit lovers there is lemon sorbet and mango. The house favourite for both children and adults is Nutella.

Hudson’s Burger Joint
Besides having some of the best burgers in Green Point, Hudson’s boast the largest, insanely delicious and most old school looking milkshakes in town. Upon entering the Hudson’s on Somerset Road, you can immediately tell that the laid back atmosphere is perfect for a gathering with a group of friends, with youngsters streaming in through their doors. Once you have spent the entire day on the beach or at the V&A shopping, driving to Hudson’s to grab one of their inexpensive enormous milkshakes is a must. I suggest that you order a small meal to accompany their rather filling milkshakes. House favourites are Oreo Shake and Choc Mint.
Monday – Sunday: 12h00 – 23h00
Address: Corner of Portswood Road and Somerset Road, Green Point
Claiming their spot in shopping malls and Cape Town suburbs is a bakery that has become a household name amongst lovers of all things sweet. Glancing into their fridge display you can’t help but at least try one of their sweet treats on offer. Their air-conditioned, open space bakery inside Sovereign Quay on Somerset Road is an establishment that attracts those wanting to escape from the heat. Making a decision as to what to have is a difficult one, but not when it comes to their homemade milkshakes. From mango to choc mint, all of their milkshakes are perfectly paired with one of their interesting flavoured macaroons. A house favourite is the Strawberry milkshake, but make sure to come in at lunchtime, as they tend to run out of fresh strawberries later in the day.
