The sultry sound of jazz music lingers onto the streets, with an ambience oozing old school glamour. Capetonians are drawn in to listen to soulful sounds of musicians paired with incredible cocktails and a delicious selection of tapas. This hideout has become popular amongst those looking for an entertaining evening, in a relaxed setting.
On my first occasion we had booked an intimate table close to the live music stage. It’s the ideal spot for both a girls’ night and a romantic outing. Seated at vintage styled wooden tables, you feel as though you have gone back in time to the birth place of jazz in deep New Orleans; so it’s difficult to believe that this vibey spot is right on our door step on the corner of Jarvis and Napier Streets in De Waterkant.
Having first opened its doors in December 2012, it’s fast become a well renowned spot for local musicians to take to the stage. New owner Gabriel Gonzalez wants the bar to offer a sophisticated music venue for musicians who are looking for a less intimidating platform to sing on. The African infused style jazz is easy-listening and truly beautiful.
The restaurant itself boasts a grand terrace, the perfect location for a glass of bubbly paired with their cheese selection. We started off with a selection of starters, their beef homemade samosas offer a gourmet twist and their fried calamari bursts with flavour – it’s best to have both. Heading straight for dessert we tried both the decadent panna cotta and mouth-watering cheese cake. Accompanying the entire meal was a fresh strawberry mojito infused with mint and a classic margarita.
Piano Bar is always changing things up and each of their bar tenders will make a unique signature cocktail on request. So live life on the wild side and try out one of their concoctions. The menu is fun and light hearted, from the food to the playful cocktails –and it certainly lives up to this. The infusion of both delicious food and upbeat tunes is what makes Piano Bar a must on anyone’s list of places to visit in Cape Town.
*A new addition to Piano Bar’s offering is Afro-Latin Sundays. The evenings will consist of soulful DJs and plenty of hip swaying.
