Have you ever been in a situation when you don’t know who to call; you’re lost on a mountain or just really need help? Life occasionally throws us emergency situations that we can’t always deal with by ourselves; and this is where mySOS comes to the rescue, offering users the chance to immediately find a solution at the touch of a smart phone button.

The mySOS app was created by a group of like-minded entrepreneurs in 2013, as they saw a need for a free one-stop solution for emergency services. South Africa has a number of emergency services providers in both the public and private sector; from ambulances and private security companies to roadside assistance companies. All of these organizations aim to uplift the community and provide additional necessary services to residents in Cape Town.

The app  has  a list of emergency contacts for various geographical locations in different cities, but also the necessary emergency numbers for nationwide help . They have done this by building relationships with these organisations and listing their numbers on the app.

So how does it work and how do I get listed?

Step 1Download the app on the app store. Search for mySOS SA.

Step 2 – Register with your email address and phone number and enter your confirmation code.

Step 3 – Enter your car insurance and medical aid details.

Step 4 – Add up to 4 emergency contacts.

Step 5 – Go through the tutorial of the app.

Step 6 – Allow mySOS to pick up your location.

Step 7 – Search the Emergency tab for Medical, Police, Fire, Sea Rescue, Local and Road Assist. Click on one of the tabs and the list will automatically be updated according to your location, with all the relevant organisations in the area.

Step 8 – Click on the ‘Find Near Me’ tab and find contact details or navigate to Hospitals, Doctors, Police, Pharmacies, Dentists and Veterinary services in your area.

Step 9 – The ‘Track me’ tab allows users to track any type of journey, run or cycle. Simply choose how long is should take and start the count down timer. If you do not clear the timer within the chosen time an sms will be sent to your emergency contacts.

Why download the app?

If you are a frequent runner or cyclist the app is the perfect solution to make sure you get back home safely after completing your exercise. It is also perfect for parents with little ones, as it’s so user friendly even your children can be taught to push the emergency contact list in a serious situation.
