There’s a new favourite in town, and it’s taking over the already competitive coffee culture in the Mother City. The Bootlegger Coffee Company was started about two years ago by a couple of guys looking for a new gig, and thank goodness they did. The brand has taken off like hipsters in skinny jeans, with the original cafés in Sea Point and Bantry Bay, newer spots in Kenilworth and Kalk Bay, and now a place for us townies in the Cape Quarter.
First, the main attraction, the coffee is made from speciality beans sourced from only the best coffee-growing countries like Guatemala and Costa Rica. It’s roasted exactly the way they like it, and clearly everyone else does too. Coffee snobs have said it tastes of toasted hazelnut, caramel, dark chocolate, and heaven… (no wonder it’s so popular)! And why hide this beautiful coffee in a mug, no, Bootlegger coffee is served in a glass for all to see.
The food is equally as exciting with all-day, DIY and Benedict breakfasts to please early birds and late bloomers alike. There’s something for everyone, including the no-bun burgers for the banters and thin-based Italian style pizza. If you’re itching for a toastie or just need a rusk to go with your coffee, Bootlegger has you covered. And of course, as all good Cape Town restaurants should, they also serve craft beer, cocktails and a great selection of local wines.
Similar to all their spaces, the Cape Quarter branch boasts beautiful interior design which complements the fresh food and dark coffee. Wide open spaces with long bench tables and smaller ones dotted around the courtyard give it a European feel, while the patterned tiles and brushed gold finishes hint of a more Eastern influence.
The restaurant does not take bookings, and they’re always full, but tables turn quickly and patrons are happy to share. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or just a coffee, Bootlegger will not disappoint – they even have free Wi-Fi (as if you needed another excuse to visit).
Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 8am to 5pm.
