Weather update

The South African Weather Service has advised the Disaster Risk Management Centre of the following weather advisory:

A well-developed cold front is expected to make landfall over the Cape on Friday evening, 22 April 2016. However, pre-frontal rainfall is likely from the morning throughout the day. Good downpours of rainfall are expected with the passage of the frontal system that evening into the Sunday morning. This could lead to significant rainfall amount over the south-western parts of the Western Cape with the majority of rainfall over the mountainous areas.

Strong winds are also expected along the south-western coastal areas during the day ahead of the front, where north-westerly winds may reach gale force. Once the cold has passed on Saturday morning, weather will start clearing fairly quickly from the west. Sea conditions will also deterioration Saturday where very rough seas with wave heights in excess of 4m can be expected on Saturday.

Special advisory:

  1. Heavy rain is expected in places over the mountainous areas of the Cape Meropole, Overberg District and Cape Winelands on Friday into Saturday morning.
  2. Strong winds (45-60km) are expected in places over the Breede River Valley, Central Karoo and southern interior of the Northern Cape on Friday.
  3. Gale force westerly to north-westerly winds of 65-75km/h are expected along the south-western coastline of the Western Cape on Friday morning spreading along the south coast overnight and moderating on Saturday morning.

All city services and applicable external agencies to be placed on high alert to deal with the consequences of the unfavourable weather that Cape Town will experience.

It will be a good idea to clean/clear the storm water drains and gutters on your property and outside your house/driveway to avoid flooding. Emergency numbers below for your convenience:
