As the temperature starts dropping, so does our motivation to leave home and actually go out for dinner instead of ordering take-aways and staying in. However, with such a lovely variety of local places to sit next to a fire and enjoy a glass of red wine with some wholesome, winter food – you’ll be motivated to leave your blanket and pyjamas at home and go explore the city even when it’s cold outside! Add the following five places to your list of places to visit in Green Point this winter.
- Alforno Café
Enjoy a romantic night with red wine, delicious gourmet pizzas and live music at this new Green Point favourite situated on the corner just opposite the Piano Bar. Alforno Café serves up delicious oven baked pizzas, pasta, and authentic Italian meals. They only opened their doors at the beginning of March, but the restaurant has been a hit ever since. Get a free glass of wine with your choice of pizza or pasta as part of their sundowner special for only R75. They are open from 07h30 – 22h30, so you can also enjoy their breakfast special, which includes two eggs, bacon, baked beans, toast and a coffee for only R40. Follow them on Facebook for updates on their menu and new specials.
- The Piano Bar
With a baby grand piano, tapas ranging from homemade samosas or crumbled mushrooms to biltong and a cheese selection, drinks and surround sound through excellent speakers – accompanied by a cosy bar room for eating and drinking – the Piano Bar is the perfect winter spot. End off your meal on a sweet note with some homemade ice cream or a piece of their cheesecake that has apparently been described as the best in Cape Town. They also have daily specials, live music and a 2-for-1 happy hour every day of the week – definitely, a must try for the next rainy evening.
- El Burro
El Burro makes you feel like you’re entering another world – one filled with happy people enjoying authentic Mexican food, candlelit dinners, and a cosy and vibrant atmosphere. If you need a break from the same old soup and bread kind of winter food, make a reservation at El Burro and enjoy a spicy, vibrant Mexican night filled with enchiladas, quesadillas, guacamole and some tequila to warm you up! They now also offer a weekday lunch special at the El Burro Taqueria on Kloof Nek where you can order three food dishes and only pay for two – as well as free Wi-Fi during the week for two hours. They are open from 12h00 – 23h30, so pop in for a lunch break with your colleagues or casual dinner with friends.
Shego is one of the latest additions to the ever-changing restaurant strip in Green Point. With dishes inspired from the South East of Turkey, you can be sure that you will receive only the best in Middle Eastern fare. It’s a small and intimate restaurant where you can enjoy honest and delicious food – complemented by warm and professional service. Choose from their selection of Middle Eastern dips and bites to start with and end off your meal with traditional desserts such as Baklava, sweet pumpkin served with fresh cream and walnuts, or Muhallebu – a vanilla custard layered with biscuits and seasonal fruit. They do not have a liquor license yet, but you’re welcome to bring a bottle of wine and they don’t charge a corkage fee, which is always a bonus. They do breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as takeaways, so if you seriously don’t feel like getting dressed – Shego is still a good option!
- Crumbs & Cream
We know – ice cream is not really something you would expect to see on a winter favourites list! However, after your dinner in front of the fire you’ll definitely need something to cool you off a little. Crumbs and Cream started with a dream about a house full of cookies and ice cream, so the owners combined these two things to bring you an ice cream sandwich! The cookies are freshly baked every day and they come in the most delicious flavours, such as brownies, choc chip, mint, red velvet and chocolate, and they even have a vegan option. If you’re not convinced – they offer you a cookie and a coffee for R30 just to make sure you have the correct balance between hot and cold. So if you haven’t been to this new spot – treat yourself to your favourite cookie, combined with your favourite ice cream flavour – all at a very affordable price.
