The crime rate increased slightly in May, with 48 reported incidents compared to 32 in April. This is partly due to the change in seasons, as the days are getting shorter and criminals take advantage of having more time to commit crimes in the dark. However, all parties are working hard to address this and everyone will be particularly alert for the rest of winter. We urge everyone to not walk alone anywhere, and to be aware of the hotspots.
As indicated on the graph, 34 crime related incidents took place during May, with eight of these cases being theft out of motor vehicles. Please don’t leave anything in your car and never park anywhere that you feel unsafe.
On 7 May we received a call in Green Point about a suspicious man walking around between cars. When we found him, he was lying underneath the car after he had already broken into the vehicle. SAPS then arrived to take a statement and the suspect was arrested. If something happens to your vehicle, please be careful of your surroundings and call one of our CID officers immediately.
We also had two reported incidents of shoplifting in Kloof Street and we want to remind all business owners to be extra careful and report suspicious behaviour immediately, as we need the assistance of everyone in the community.
Please save the CID contact numbers on your phone so that whenever you feel unsafe in any situation or area, you can give one of our officers a call on 071 670 3019 or 072 944 6811 for assistance.
