From the minute you walk through the door a wave of aromatic coffee, fresh bread and chitter chatter overtakes your senses. It’s as if you’ve travelled through time and space and wound up somewhere in a small alley in Italy – and not the dodgy kind. The kind that will leave you with a story to tell, a flavour you won’t forget, a product that will remind you of something your grandmother used to buy on special holidays.
Giovanni’s takes passion for food to the next level. If that’s the only thing you remember from this article, then that’s just fine. Set in the vibrant suburb of Green Point, on one of the shoulders of Main Road, this deli come food shop is something of culinary heaven – a heaven that’s open seven days a week!
On the shelves you’ll find a myriad of Italian delicacies but don’t think this spot is just for the elite – this is a family store and so everyone is welcome. Pick up cheeses and meats and salads, or ready-cooked foods and sweet treats. There are loads of heat-and-eat meals too, and don’t you dare leave without something from the bakery. The bagels you’ll find there have a reputation that precedes them but don’t just take our word for it, go see for yourself.
If you have a little more time, then pull up a bar stool and take in the energy at the espresso bar. Open from Monday through Sunday, 07h30 to 21h00, you can choose between breakfast, lunch and dinner or something in between. And lastly, if this is simply a pit stop on the way to another destination you’ll find unique bits that no other guest will have brought for the gathering (unless of course they also had the brilliant idea of visiting Giovanni’s). An essential item to put on you pick-up-and-go list is a bottle of original Italian limoncello. Delizioso!
Take a trip to Europe without leaving the city through Giovanni’s “little Italy”. What better way to spend summer than filling a basket with fresh delicacies and making your way to a park for the flavour picnic of a lifetime.
