Freedom of Movement in the modern world

Freedom. Movement. Quality. Authenticity. Innovation. South African. Leather. Passion. These are all words that are deeply entrenched in the Freedom of Movement (FOM) brand, their vision and their way of pursuing traditional craftsmanship while catering for the modern day. A company started in 2013 by two brothers, with a drive for entrepreneurship and design, FOM holds the promise of becoming a name on the lips of all those who consider themselves on the brink of bespoke fashion.

Each genuine leather product has its own identity, much like their owners… The Bobby, The Ralph, The Ted, The Marley. Walk in and dare to pick up your next best friend, so to speak. Whether you’re looking for a trendy bag, a classic timepiece, a new feature item for your wardrobe or a practical accessory, Freedom of Movement should be your first stop. Made with care, efficiency and the finest attention to detail, each product is an investment worth making and they’ll tell you how to care for it too.

FOM has recently established a Cape Town branch, after successfully maintaining their Pretoria and Stellenbosch store for the past few years. What is most intriguing about this shop is that all the while browsing, you’ll hear chatting and the soft hum of hands at work in the background. What is it? A small workshop, hidden behind the store’s enticing floor space. These bespoke leather products are handmade in store – each customised, giving them personality and an edge.

With summer creeping into the mother city, you’ll want to visit FOM as soon as possible and get ahead of the crowd. Find out more about the brand’s story by talking to Henning who’ll be more than happy to chat.

Soak up the sun in the Green Point Urban Park

The Green Point Urban Park can be described as a little piece of paradise for Capetonians! Whether you’re looking for a fun day out, a spot for your family picnic, somewhere to go on romantic walks or just an open area for a run, this is the place to be.

The park has been carefully designed and is home to a rich diversity of plants indigenous to the Cape. It features almost 25 000 indigenous trees and flowers, and almost 300 different plant species in the Biodiversity Showcase Garden. The wide paved path throughout the park allows for pedestrians, cyclists, children and even our furry friends.

Information boards and educational pockets also makes this the perfect place to learn more about South Africa’s biodiversity and to sharpen your flora knowledge. Anyone is welcome to enjoy picnics in the park, but remember that you can’t braai. To keep the peace and to give everyone a fair chance to enjoy all the park has to offer, no alcohol or loud music is allowed.

Get wonderfully lost this summer and explore a different side of Cape Town while soaking up the summer sun on a park bench. The park is open between sunrise and sunset, so you have ample time to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Also remember to tag us in your Green Point photos to be featured on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages.

P.S. Don’t miss out on the Green Point Parkrun which takes place every Saturday. See the course page for more details.

We Mustacchio a question

You’ll definitely want to hit up Kloof Street’s new hotspot this summer – Mustacchio Caffe, a coffee powerhouse and burger stop. This trendy, near-hipster restaurant stands opposite McDonald’s and is where you want to be seen from early morning breakfasts to late night drinks and dessert.

The brand, originally born in Italy, has crossed borders and made its home in the bustling Cape Town CBD. Inspired by the friendly, open street café’s overseas, Mustacchio is the kind of place you can go if you’re looking for a quiet coffee, a family lunch or a good time with a group of friends. They offer a little something for everyone, in any weather. Make a booking, simply walk in and sit down or a grab a take away for those nights at home.

The kitchen has already surprised us with some interesting menu options. Most noticeable is their signature breakfast, The Waffle Stack – a tasty start to a work day. If you need to switch off and wind down with a satisfying lunch, try their Belgian Waffle Burger. Yes, it’s as good as it sounds – served with hand-cut chips and homemade BBQ sauce. They are very service focused and the staff go the extra mile to make you smile.

If all that isn’t enough to tempt you to visit, they serve a refreshing range of Cape Town brewed craft beers. You’ll find the Woodstock Brewery Californicator IPA, Rhythm Stick English Pale Ale, Hazy Daze Belgian Witbier and Happy Pils German Pilsner all on tap and ready to tantalise your taste buds. These brews guarantee that the glass is always half full (although we’d advise completely full)! Talk of a twist and some tricks up their sleeve, Mustacchio makes a one-of-a-kind Italian mascarpone-based sweet treat: The Happy Pils Beer Tiramisu.

Don’t put it off for another day and don’t make us ask you again, have you been to Mustaccio Caffe yet? Hopefully you’ll be able to say “yes” really soon.
