Festive season fun isn’t over yet

“Security starts with yourself,” according to Marius Swanepoel, Green Point and Oranje-Kloof City Improvement District (GP/OKCID) Security Manager. He goes on to say, “Do not leave anything in your vehicle; take your bag with you – don’t think it’s smart moving it to the boot. People are watching you; don’t leave valuables in your car. Know your surroundings. Be alert.”

As mentioned in security reports preceding the festive season fun, theft out of motor vehicles has been one of the biggest battles of crime in the Mother City. The fight continues as the GP/OKCID pushes to boost awareness of this avoidable incident. As we press into January and further into 2017, it’s important that we keep these simple and strategic things in mind.

Looking back at the month of December, the biggest challenge was robberies against tourists. All that considered though the stats didn’t spike as high as anticipated, and the numbers actually dipped compared to the year before. There were a lot more security members deployed in strategic areas and special attention was paid to hotspots like Cape Quarter, Rose Street and busy areas in the CBD.

The collaboration between GP/OKCID, SAPS, Law Enforcement, Essential, De Waterkant Civic Association and members of the public was a near-seamless operation. There has been a notable increase in involvement from the community and it has made all the difference.

Going forward there will be an increase in the security team complement, more security cameras being put up and stricter and more strategic patrol schedules. Marius adds, “When people feel like they contribute to making the city better they feel like they matter. There is a sense of urgency and the need for better communication in Cape Town overall and we’re doing our part.” Here’s to taking the festive season fun with us into 2017.

SECURITY REPORT – DECEMBER 2016

December washed over us with a surge of excitement and tourists. Fortunately, the wave of crime that many anticipate did not break. We only encountered 46 incidents over the course of the month, of which 25 were specifically crime related. A proud moment for the security team was when an arrest was made in Park Road. The suspect attempted to get away with R5 000 in cash but was apprehended. Well done to all GP/OKCID and SAPS members involved.

The biggest issue faced in the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof areas is still theft out of motor vehicles. It cannot be stressed enough: do not leave any valuables in your vehicle. It’s not enough to simply put your bags in the boot or hide items under the seat. Theft in this instance is completely preventable if value things aren’t left in the vehicle.

Marius Swanepoel, our GP/OKCID security manager said, “We did very well over the festive season. We had extra staff and everyone worked together to keep crime at a minimum.” It’s easy for incidents to take place in a crowded city. This sentiment is reassuring in light of the fact that Cape Town welcomes in a myriad of people from across the globe.

From the beginning of February, GP/OKCID officers will resume their regular stationing, along with Law Enforcement and SAPS. As a security conglomerate, we’re excited about what the year ahead holds in terms of taking care of the Mother City.

To each person who helped us over the festive season – whether by alerting us to suspicious activity, thanking us for a job well done or simply doing your part for the city too, we want to thank you and wish you a wonderful 2017. Remember that we’re here for you around the clock, so make sure you have our emergency numbers saved in your phone in case you ever need us.
