Every now and then humanity has a stroke of genius that changes the face of things as we know them. One of those times (we believe) was the invention of hot chocolate!
Before you argue with us, we invite you to take a quick tour around some of our favourite Green Point spots to grab a rich, warm cup of the good stuff.
Giovanni’s can best be described as little Europe. From the moment you walk in, it feels as though you have teleported to a café in Florence. The deli has been around since 1989, so they really know what they’re doing.
Make yourself comfortable amongst the fresh baked bread, exceptional range of cheeses and other interesting delicacies as you wait for a cup of thick, sweet cioccolata calda. (Thankfully, good food doesn’t need subtitles!)
Find them at 103 Main Rd, Green Point.
Trading Hours: 07h30 – 21h00 Monday – Sunday
If you’re looking for an all-round sensory experience, we recommend popping in for a cup of delicious hot chocolate at Ground Art Caffe, where ‘coffee, food and art are each treated with equal respect and attention to detail.’
If fine art isn’t your cup of hot chocolate. There are still stunning views of Table Mountain (and free wi-fi) that make the visit worthwhile.
Find them at 160 Strand Street.
Trading Hours: Mon – Fri 07h00 – 16h00 / Saturday 07h00 – 14h00 / Sunday – Closed
An offshoot of the well known TRUTH. Coffee company, this centre seems to be for the caffeine loving only. But don’t be fooled, their hot chocolate is definitely an option on the menu and it’s served up with a cookie on the side as an extra treat.
While you are sipping, take a look around, because you will be sitting on the site of the Prestwich Memorial Museum, a multi-purpose public facility and memorial garden. This space was where a fascinating discovery was made in 2003. We won’t give it away, but if you are a history buff, this is the hot chocolate spot for you.
Find them at 1 Somerset Road, Greenpoint.
Trading Hours: Mon – Sun 07h00 – 18h00
There is only one way to describe this café and that is colourful! Pink walls, cacti and plenty of attitude to go around, Café Manhattan is a party just waiting to happen.
If you have the stomach to hold down your hold chocolate while mid fiesta, then party on. One tip: bring a friend, or even better, bring a few. If the hot chocolate and warm atmosphere don’t keep you toasty, the company will.
Find them on 74 Waterkant Street, De Waterkant.
Trading Hours: Mon – Fri 16h00 – 23h00 / Sat – Sun 12h00-23h00 / Bar closes at 23h00
This popular coffee joint has spread faster than we can keep up with. There are two to choose from in Green Point alone!
What is wonderful about this franchise is that it doesn’t feel like one: dark, ornate and minimal – it attracts hipsters like flies, but also serves REALLY good, affordable treats. Our recent favourite indulgence – their R32 Coconut Vegan Hot Chocolate, need we say more?
Find them at 37 Main road, Green Point or shop 45, The Cape Quarter, 27 Somerset Road, Green Point.
Trading hours: Mon – Fri 06h30 – 21h00 / Sat, Sun & public holidays 07h30 – 21h00
