Much like the weather in Cape Town this past month, September was a turbulent few weeks within the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof areas.
We’ll start with the good news. A great arrest was made last week in Green Point, after a cell phone was robbed off somebody at Cubaña in Somerset Road. The suspect ran through St. Andrews Square and was caught by one of our security officers. The cell phone was handed back to the rightful owner, and the suspect was arrested.
Onto the bad news. There were two incidents of car break ins this past month, and two cases of armed robbery.
Although it’s disheartening for all of us to hear about and experience the increased crime, there are basic precautions we can take to keep ourselves safe. This is especially important if you’re visiting Cape Town for the first time. First and foremost, please be aware of your surroundings: do not have your cameras, cell phones, or other valuables out in the open if you can avoid it, and don’t leave them on a seat in your vehicle. If you leave items on show, expect them to go! Lastly, please don’t be caught out by false security guards pretending to ask for money in town – they’re fraudsters.
