Having opened just over a week ago, El Burro Taqueria serves a selection of the best dishes from their flagship El Burro restaurant in Green Point. Having phoned to try book a table for a group of friends, I was slightly hesitant to go when I heard they didn’t take bookings… but decided not to let it alter my decision as I knew I could only expect the best authentic Mexican food in Cape Town. Although it was full, the turnover of tables was incredibly speedy, with patrons only having to wait 5-10 minutes to be seated.
Situated next to the likes of The Power and Glory and Rafikis, the restaurant is targeted at a similar crowd, with young professionals meeting up with friends for some wine and tapas styled food. Our waitress Megan was filled with enthusiasm and adorning a traditional Mexican inspired outfit. She walked us through their entire menu, making suggestions as she went along.
We ordered an array of dishes off their menu, similar to what the other guests in the restaurant were doing. With chilli poppers to start, followed by steak quesadillas and beef and pork tacos, it was a feast which left us completely satisfied. The food was fresh, light and flavourful, with their own range of spicy sauces to accompany all of their meals. Their drinks menu showcases both local and international drinks from Mexican tequila to Jack Black craft beer on tap, leaving very little room for complaints and appealing to every customer.
Whether you wanting a quick bite to eat after work, or a hands-on dinner date for two, this cosy restaurant is a must on any foodie bucket list.
