2015 statistics for the Western Cape indicate that approximately 10 500 vehicles were either hijacked or stolen throughout the year, meaning every vehicle owner in the Western Cape has a one in 100 chance of having their vehicle hijacked or stolen. This highlights the need for more effective security systems and for all security service providers to stand together to combat crime. Additionally, if communities are more informed of incidents taking place then other forms of crime can be prevented, as everyone can be more cautious and on the lookout for suspicious behaviour and crimes in their neighbourhoods.
Pro-Active South Africa was registered in 2011 with the goal of combatting crime at a greater scale, and at the same time, making a difference by sowing back into the community. With the rise of crime statistics in South Africa, it is becoming increasingly evident that all possible parties must stand together to attempt to fight crime more effectively and to assist each other where possible.
The Pro-Active program is an application that users download on their smart phones to report vehicle theft or hijacking immediately, via the application or SMS. Pro-Active will then distribute the information about the incident immediately to all PSIRA registered Security Service Providers so that all parties are notified to assist with the incident. The application uses the holder’s GPS co-ordinates, if active on their smart phones, as the location of the incident. This enables faster and more effective dispatching of vehicles into the affected areas. Incidents can also be reported via SMS, which will only work via the registered owner’s mobile number. Alternatively, if the client’s phone gets stolen they can use a neighbour’s smart phone or tablet to report the incident via the web application.
Only the vehicle information is distributed to the Security Service Providers, with the owner’s reported incident location and contact details in the event of recovery. Whenever an incident takes place that Pro-Active is informed of, live graphs will be distributed to make all information available to not just the Security Service Providers, but also the South African Police Service and the community.
